Exotic Serpents is owned and operated by a husband and wife team, David and Norma Chan.

For me, David, I was always fascinated by snakes but did not even know that you could actually own these beautiful animals as pets.  One day we were at the horse race track in Vancouver and there was a group of people surrounding this one lady and you could tell something was going on.  When we went over, we saw that she had a baby ball python in her hand and seeing as how I was there to take photos of the horses at the track that day, I asked if I could take a picture of the snake. She said yes, but offered the snake to my wife to hold and I could photograph it with her.  At first my wife was afraid to handle the snake, but after some convincing, she took hold of it and it was love at first touch.  I snapped the pictures and moved on.  On the way home, my wife started talking about owning snakes and that she would love to learn more about these beautiful animals.  I just sat and listened, but did not really think that it was going to go anywhere.

One day she asked me about possibly owning a snake, to which I said, yeah right.  I kind of gave it some thought but did not comment.  I had rented snakes in the past for photo shoots, but never really gave it much thought of owning a snake.

At the time, my wife and I were only dating.  Then we got married and when we moved in together, I was unpacking when I saw 2 pillow sacks moving around. I was rattled when I opened the pillow bags to find a ball python and a boa constrictor inside. I screamed a horrifying shriek.....lol.

I told her that we were not going to keep them as pets so they would have to go, but then she said to me if they go so will she.  Well, I did not want to lose her over the snakes, I decided to give it a try, it took me about 2 years before I held it in my hands.  I must say, after that, I wanted to learn more about the snakes and perhaps the business of snakes.

I spent approximately 7 years studying the business and learning all about the snakes.  It was in 2001 that we decided to start a business for breeding snakes and creating beautiful living art.  These animals to me were spectacular.

I decided that it would be a great hobby that could eventually become a pretty great income.  I felt this was a perfect investment project for our retirement.

In 2001, we took the plunge and really got into the breeding and creating beautiful living art.  It was at this time, that I felt we had made a mistake in the sense that we were not sure if we could keep these animals alive and breeding them, we ended up investing in cheaper morphs.  I could see the animals were not quite as clean and crisp as some of the animals I have seen in others collections and wondered why.

Then I met a few top end breeders who explained to me about the quality of top lineage and bloodlines.  It is here that I learnt about F3 animals and at this point decided that I would only be interested in working with F3 animals for my breeding stock.

The animals produced from the F3 animals, were spectacular and now I understood what it takes to produce these beautiful and clean crisp looking animals.

Over the past 15 years we have been enjoying the passion of creating these beautiful morphs.  Since I retired 6 years ago from being a stills  photographer, I look forward to getting up every day and working with these great animals.  We definitely have a great passion for what we do.

Over the years, we love sharing our passion for these animals and have offered mentoring to those that are interested in getting into the business of breeding the animals for investments.

I also opened up a investment business for those who wanted to invest their monies into something that was not so conventional in main stream business.  Explaining to many of my clients, the ROI (return on investment) in this legal investment, yet the returns on investment were just astronomical.   Some were skeptical others took a chance and saw phenomenal returns on their investment.  For those who were skeptical, eventually they wanted in, but by that time, we just could not take in any more investors.

We love converting the snake haters into snake lovers.  Showing people that there is nothing to fear but fear itself.

During this time, I have become an advocate for the reptile business in B.C. and an adviser to the provincial government on the Exotic Species Ban list.  I also advocate for those wrongly charged for having what the government calls public dangerous animals.

I believe that we have the best warranty in the business as we give a full 2 year warranty on our animals.

In 2015 we were the first to produce the Scoria boa project in Canada.  At the time of this writing we may have produced another first as far as ball pythons are concerned, check out our website for the announcement of this possible new morph.

We look forward to producing more beautiful living art and sharing them with the general public and sharing our passion for these beautiful reptiles.

We look forward to hearing from those interested in this great hobby/business.
